Epiphone SG Special Review

Epiphone is an acquisition of Gibson in 1957, which became a subsidiary company for the brand that makes the more affordable version of the famous Les Paul and SG models. It is still a stand alone guitar maker in a way by having their guitars made in a separate building with its own management team that handles the production and distribution of the guitars. Also they still continued to make world class archtop guitar models, that rivaled Gibson back in the days, using the same patterns from Epiphone New York era.

Epiphone SG Special VE offers players to enjoy an old favorite guitar. This model from Epiphone features the right stuff found on an SG without having to spend much money for one, and a great affordable guitar for enthusiast out there to join their collection.

Body and Neck: Epiphone SG Special VE has double cutaway body with a 2-layer pickguard made of mahogany that comes in an array of finishes to select from. Mahogany body is used in multi and single wood guitar bodies. The wood is reddish in color with straight grain, fairly dense making it easy to work with, glued and take finishes well. It is medium to heavy in weight, able to produce a good depth of warm tones and has a great bass response.

The bolt-on slim tapered D-shape neck is crafted using okoume, combined with a medium jumbo 22 frets rosewood fingerboard. Rosewood as a tone wood is use for entry level to expensive guitars. It adds warmth and a roomy kind of sound.

Pick-ups: Generating the main sound output of the guitar are two humbuker pick-ups. Epiphone 650R humbucker for the neck and 700T humbucker in the bridge controlled by 3-way toggle switch for selecting pick-ups, master volume, and master tone.

Hardware: Nickel Locktone Tune-o-Matic bridge with Stopbar and Premium tuners 14:1 ratio holds the string, at the same time keeping it in tune.

Final Thoughts: Epiphone SG Special VE together with the Epiphone Les Paul LP-100 and other electric guitars from Epiphone with the same pedigree is the by product of the merge of the two companies. Epiphone SG Special is basically the strip down version of the Gibson SG Fusion, but not as far when considering how the controls are placed and use to go with the humbucker pick-ups in producing the iconic SG sound.
