G&L Tribute JB-2 Review

G&L founded by Leo Fender and George Fullerton in the late 1970’s was all about simplicity and refinement on their original designs. This modern improvements applied on G&L models of guitars and basses separates it from Leo’s first creations in Fender, so do expect something different out of these instruments design, sound and playability.

Focusing now on G&L bass models especially with the G&L Tribute JB-2. This bass will surprise any bassist out there on how good sounding the pick-ups are and registers a sustain not heard before even on old basses because of its rudimentary bridge design.

Body and Neck: G&L Tribute JB-2 sleek body curves is carve out of swamp ash in two finishes, natural and 3-color sunburst minus a protective shield. Swamp ash body is desired for being light in weight which is ideal for long hours of play, broad grain that looks really great in translucent finish, and is a highly resonant tonewood to capture both classic and modern tones.

This jazz bass has a comfortable medium C-profile maple neck with 21 medium jumbo frets in rosewood or maple fingerboard complete with inlay dots as markers, then it is bolt-on to the body using six screws without a plate.

Pick-ups: G&L Tribute JB-2 gets its sound from two G&L designed single-coil alnico V pick-ups placed on the neck and bridge controlled by dual-volume for each single-coil and a master tone to blend.

Hardware: Another best feature to be seen on this bass is the innovative G&L Saddle-Lock bridge and Traditional Open-back Tuning keys that is excellent in transferring string energy right into the body creating a lot of sustain and in keeping the bass in proper tune.

Final Thoughts: G&L Tribute JB-2 is part of Leo’s best creation. The refinement he did is not to replace the original Fender bass, but to show that there is still can be done and not stick only to the classic. Moreover, the simplistic design of the G&L Tribute JB-2 carries, gives the bass it own character and originality aside from the sound and playability it offers.

Another thing to be appreciated on this bass guitar is its price. It is not cheap for a bass and not also expensive. Just at the right affordability that everyone has an equal opportunity to have a nice quality bass.
