Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ Review

On a starter pack or just by purchasing the bass alone, Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ is an excellent choice of a bass guitar for beginners to debut on a lesser expense. The design of the bass is by Fender, patterned over the P-bass where the brand started and became known for. Its body design and how it generates tones is already a standard or shall we say highly regarded in the industry. The Squier models of PJ bass are considered the cost conscious best alternative to a Fender.

Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ is proudly made in Asia. The built quality of this entry level bass guitar of Squier overall is very decent to bring out the classic sound, feel and comfort relative to an original Fender to consider. That’s already a lot of bass for not a lot of money.

Body and Neck: The P/J bass features a contoured double cutaway body made in alder with a variety of solid polyurethane finishes protected by a black 3-ply scratch plate. This tonewood is distinctly synonymous to Fender made guitars and basses. It is a medium weight wood, but also can be heavy to some. Sonic properties is full bodied for a roomy feel, sustaining, producing fatty mids and excellent lows.

Neck is comparable to a Fender Standard P-bass design. It is 34” scale length, nut width is 41.3mm and has a modern C-shape profile combine with a 20 frets medium jumbo rosewood fingerboard complete with inlay dots. For now Squier Affinity Series hasn’t release yet a maple fingerboard version.

Pick-ups: Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ is is powered by two pick-ups. Standard Split Single-Coil Precision Bass on the neck and Standard Single-Coil Jazz Bass for the bridge controlled by separate volume knobs for each pick-ups and a master tone. Having two pick-ups makes this bass as versatile as the Affinity J-bass. Enabling players to blend and find a sweet spot on their tones.

Hardware: Keeping intonation in set as well tuning in check is an adjustable 4-Saddle Standard bridge, and Standard Open-Gear Machine Heads in matching chrome finish.

Final Thoughts: Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ together with the Affinity J-bass is a gem for its price range. The alder body and maple neck with rosewood fingerboard is top and the nicest thing you’ll ever get on a entry level instrument.

Pick-ups are acceptable in regards to the sound it can deliver. Bridge is robust can handle the everyday play, while the tuners is manageable to set the tuning, but more likely to be replace in the long run because of its gear ratio and not of the best quality.

For the reason of a beginner bass, all in all this bass will get you more than you paid for. As a project bass, placing alnico V pups and better tuners makes this a stage worthy bass.
