Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special Review

Third most popular bass guitar made by Fender that was pass on to their Squier line is the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special. The design of the body of this bass is somewhat similar to a Jazz bass only with shorter horns on its cutaways. This bass like the Affinity Series J-bass and P/J bass of Squier mainly targets the beginner audience to have a decent sounding playable Fender style instruments.

Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special is also available in a short scale version called the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS. It is 30” inches in length compared to the full scale version and without the Active Bass Boost Circuit on-board. Price for the short scale jaguar matches the Affinity Series J-bass and P/J bass, while for the full scale Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special is slightly higher, but still affordable.

Body and Neck: The jaguar shape body of the bass is crafted using basswood or agathis then it is finish with polyurethane in solid and sunburst color players can choose from protected by a 3-ply pickguard. Its tonewood body is light to medium weight with fine straight grains to absorb finishes well. Tonally can grind a beefy well balance tones, but always underrated because basswood and agathis is a timber associated more in making entry level instruments.

This Squier jaguar model has a similar neck to the Squier Jazz Bass. It is 34” inch scale with a slim C-shape profile made in maple top of by a 20 medium jumbo frets rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays as markers bolt-on to the body using plate and screws. The neck profile of this jaguar maybe slim for some and okay for others really depends on preference. Currently the neck of this bass in stock form is only available in rosewood.

Pick-ups: Delivery of its classic as well as modern tones is produce by Vintage-Style Split Single-Coil Precision Bass pick-ups on the neck and for the bridge is Standard Single-Coil Jazz Bass pick-ups controlled by separate volume controls, master tone and Active Bass Boost Circuit on-board.

Hardware: Hardware is the Standard Adjustable 4-Saddle bridge and Standard Open-Gear tuners in chrome. Taking care of intonation and keeping the bass in the right pitch.

Final Thoughts: Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special is another option to choose in the Squier line, offering beginners a nice sounding and playable bass guitar to start with. The built quality of the body and neck is properly shape and well finished using acceptable materials by standards.

Pick-ups are decent to provide the necessary tones, enhanced by adding an Active Bass Boost Circuit on-board for a more full bodied sound. Bridge is stable when adjusted and roadworthy enough to last, while on other hand the tuners could have been a lot better if the gear ratio was made finer. Overall the Vintage Modified Series of Squier which includes the Jaguar Bass Special is considered top in its category based on price, sound and playability.
